colonialism within europe: fact or fancy?

This conference draws on the ongoing debate about Ireland's status as a colony to stimulate discussion about the colonial character of rule in other parts of Europe in the early modern and modern eras.  The bulk of the papers are case studies, which address the discourses and practices applied by the state and elites to newly acquired territories on their borders.  The territories considered include parts of present-day France, Denmark, Italy, Poland, the Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Bosnia, and Persia.  Experts on overseas colonialism will provide commentary.  The goal is to decide which European territories, if any, were indeed subjected to the kind of rule that operated in the colonies of European powers in Africa and Asia.  Prof. Mark von Hagen, a world-renowned scholar on Russian and Ukrainian history based at Arizona State University, will deliver the keynote address.
