The ICERTS research programme consists of five research themes and six functions as depicted in the diagram below. These interrelated themes and modes of work are to be connected in such a way as to form a coherent totality. Within this overarching research framework there is a system of core sub-programmes, each of which may have satellite sub-programmes. See below for more details on each research cluster.
Agri-Food Economics:

Regional/Rural Economy:
Rural area typology; employment composition and trends; multifunctionality indicators; rural participation in spatial planning; rural enterprise; competitiveness of rural areas; technology and innovation in rural areas.
Environmental and Natural Resources:
Environment indicators; nitrates and water framework analysis; REPS; rural recreation; biodiversity; demographic impacts on the rural landscape; climatic change impacts; coastal area and marine ecology.
Rural Demogrpahy and Quality of Life:
Settlement patterns; rural demographic structure and trends; ethnographic studies; quality of life indicators; rural/urban comparisons in quality of life; access to services; isolation in rural areas; poverty and exclusion; gender dimension in rural life; social gerontology.
Community, Social Capital & Governance:
Dynamics of local community structures; socio-economics relationships; rural community identity; community social infrastructure; impact of migration and commuting; ethnic minorities and community relationships; social capital and community socio-economic wellbeing; local governance; local authority finance; social and economic sustainability of rural communities.
