background to the bsc health and safety systems
Health & Safety has become a major concern for society. Its growing significance is highlighted by increasing legislation and regulation at Irish, European and United Nations (UN) levels.
Health & Safety is a discipline that is primarily focussed on the welfare and well-being of people at work. It is also concerned with the safety of technological systems within the workplace, and with the impact of workplace activity on the wider environment.
The safety of consumer goods and services is a further consideration. Nowhere is this more evident than in the production of medical devices and other healthcare products, and in the delivery of Health Services.
Until relatively recently, Health & Safety practice was largely driven by the need to meet legal and regulatory requirements. It was viewed negatively, as just another cost in running an organisation. More recently, it has come to be viewed as an integral part of an organisation's activity, contributing to the welfare of employees, public perception of the organisation and ultimately to the quality and success of the product or service delivered.
