MY SECONDARY SCHOOL:
St. Rynagh’s Community College, Banagher, Co Offaly
YEAR I GRADUATED FROM NUI,GALWAY:
2007
WHAT I DO NOW:
I am working for Meteor Mobile Communications Ltd, an Irish mobile communications provider based in City West Business Park, in Dublin. I work as a health and safety officer My work is varied as there are so many aspects to the business. Basically, I am focussed on ensuring that the Technical and Operational divisions are carrying out their work activities safely, as they set about maintaining and updating the network. I also address Health & Safety in the company's 40 retail outlets and eight offices, nationwide I am kept busy carrying out risk assessment’s, implementing procedures, auditing and managing numerous projects that address the need for continual improvement and compliance with the international standard’s OHSAS18001 and ISO14001.
MY FIRST JOB:
Professionally, Meteor is my first real job. Prior to that I worked in a family business - a pub and grocery shop in the west of Ireland. Looking back on it, the wages weren’t great!!
THE 'IN-BETWEEN' YEARS!
No stories to tell here I'm afraid! I’m fresh out of college and straight into the workplace. I even completed my professional experience programme with Meteor, in 2006. This is part of the reason I had to come back. The company itself has a fantastic safety culture, is ever increasing in size and continually advancing in the telecommunications industry. With these advances come new and exciting challenges for the Environmental, Health & Safety department. We are continually building and improving aspects of our management system to cater for these changes and advances, allowing Meteor to lead the industry in Environmental and Safety management
LOOKING BACK ON WHY I DID THE BSc HEALTH AND SAFETY
At the time I’m not sure really that I knew what I was letting myself in for. The area of health and safety was still pretty new in terms of degree courses. But, I suppose I picked it because of the opportunities it would leave me with. At the time, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do as a profession, but health and safety was a ’safe bet’ as it's part of every job there is! Whatever the job, whatever the industry, there is a role for health and safety. I have that option, to enter whatever business area takes my fancy, with new and exciting challenges to face every time.
