MY SECONDARY SCHOOL:
St Catherines VS, Killybegs, Co Donegal
YEAR I GRADUATED FROM NUI,GALWAY:
2006
WHAT I DO NOW:
I am currently completing a PhD in NUI Galway, in the area of Occupational Hygiene. My research, which is mainly focussed on the construction and heavy engineering sectors, involves a study of whole body and hand arm vibration, and the implementation of a management system. This is the first such project to be undertaken in Ireland
MY FIRST JOB:
My first job after graduating was with Douglas Wallace Architects, where I worked as a Health and Safety Advisor in Ireland and the UK. My responsibilities included:
- Implementation of a Safety Management System
- Acting as Project Supervisor - Design Process, on retail projects
- Internal training and maintenance of records
Douglas Wallace were also the first architectural practice to win a National Irish Safety Award, in 2006
THE 'IN-BETWEEN' YEARS!
I spent 6 months on work placement in Waterford in a pharmaceutical company called Genzyme. I found the placement to be a great ’first experience’ in health and safety, and after the 6 months I had a much better idea what area of health and safety I had most interest in.
LOOKING BACK ON WHY I DID THE BSc HEALTH & SAFETY:
Being completely honest, I chose this course by accident, but thankfully, I enjoyed the 4 years and haven’t regretted my career choice. I found the course to be quite diverse, yet very interactive and hands-on. There were a number of site visits etc throughout the four years, and the 6 month placement in third year was vital when I graduated in 2006.
