The BSc Health & Safety Systems is a truly multidisciplinary programme. Students are equipped with knowledge and skills in the basic sciences, in health sciences, in human sciences, in technology and in regulatory affairs. Students also get to meet Health & Safety practitioners and get to experience life as a Health & Safety professional by completing a formal work-experience element; the Professional Experience Programme (PEP)
The broad thrust of the programme is as follows:
Students acquire a strong scientific base by attending courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. They are also introduced to practical issues in Health & Safety, including risk assessment and the legal framework governing the policies and practices of Health & Safety
Students attend courses in Anatomy and Physiology, in order to understand the risk of injury arising from various types of work and environmental exposure. Aspects of work in industrial settings and work organisation are covered. Environmental factors are considered in specialised Physics, Chemistry and Microbiology course units. Students are introduced to Health & Safety Practice. The Legal background to Health & Safety is further explained.
There are course units on Occupational Health, Occupational Hygiene, Epidemiology and Ergonomics. Practical approaches to incorporating Safety in the Design of products, services and workplaces are introduced. Safety in Construction is specifically considered. There is further development of the legal backdrop to Health & Safety – the role of common, European and international law is explored, as is the issue of enforcement.
Students obtain their workplace experience at the end of Year 3.
The final year of the programme has a strong professional orientation.
Each student completes a major Project, which in many instances will be a follow-up to the work placement. Case Studies dealing with Regulatory issues are considered. Students gain an appreciation of how Health & Safety management systems mesh with the overall operation of a business. There are also course units covering relationships between Health and the Work Environment, Health Promotion in the workplace and the quantification of risk arising from Human Behaviour and System Failures.
