Fraudulent eMails Requesting Login Credentials - 20 March 2011
Phishing is an attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as username and password, by masquerading as a trustworthy organisation or individual in an email message. ISS do NOT and WILL NEVER request details of your password by an email mail-shot. If you receive a message asking for your email account details, delete it without response and report the ’phishing’ email to the ISS Service Desk.

EndNote X2 and earlier versions - Known Issue - 13 January 2010
Thomson Reuters have reported that in many cases, bibliographic records with a publication date of 2010 or later will not import the year data into EndNote X2 and earlier. A patch to correct this issue for EndNote X2 users is now available online. For all versions prior to X2, the year must be added manually - see the FAQ

Campus Account Self Service (CASS)
All students are required to activate their new Campus Account. A new Campus Account will provide student access to all computing services (other than email) i.e. PC Suites, NUIGWiFi, Blackboard, Library Systems, Self-Service Registration, MyCampus, Placement, Exam timetable and Exam results. Campus Account replaces the multiple accounts, passwords and PIN numbers used in previous years. Please visit the CASS (Campus Account Self Service) website for more information.
College of Engineering & Informatics first year student laptop scheme - 16 September 2009
Deliveries of the Lenovo W500 laptops preconfigured with applications are planned for Thursday 17th and 24th September 2009, 2.30 pm to 5 pm in E201 Civil Engineering Building. Changeover from WebMail to StudentMail (26/27 May 2009)
Students who currently use WebMail will be changed to the StudentMail service. The changeover period is 26/27 May. This change will affect 662 students currently using WebMail. All students who will be affected by this change will receive an email to their NUI Galway address which contains details of their new StudentMail account. Fraudulent eMails Requesting Banking Details - 23 April 2009
We are aware that an email message purporting to be from AIB bank has been delivered to a number of University email addresses. Please be advised that this is a fraudulent email which does not originate from AIB and is instead an example of a common scam known as �€�phishing�€�. More information on phising is available online. No bank, or reputable Internet merchant, will ever request that you enter your account or account access details in response to an email. AIB bank has published further information on the recurrence of this scam on its website. If you are in receipt of this email, you may follow the instructions detailed in the AIB bulletin about this issue: specifically, to forward a copy of the email to alert aib.ie and then delete the original email.

Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional Now Available - 19 March 2009
NUI Galway now has an academic term site licence for Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional. This software is available to permanent staff of NUIG, but is not available to students for home use. Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional will be available in the PC suites for the academic year 2009/2010. Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional replaces PDF Converter Pro which will be removed from the PC suites.
Changeover from WebMail to StudentMail (18/19 March 2009)
Students who currently use WebMail will be changed to the StudentMail service. The changeover period commences at 18:00 on Wednesday, 18 March and runs through Thursday, 19 March. Access to the new service will be available from Friday, 20 March. This change will affect almost 10,000 students. Note that there are a small number of exceptions. All students who will be affected by this change will receive an email to their NUI Galway address which contains details of their new StudentMail account. Saving Energy at NUI Galway - 27 February 2009
Saving energy can help protect the environment and reduce costs. Everyone can help to save energy at NUI Galway by reducing the amount of power your office computer consumes. The energy consumption measured in watts for a typical 2006 model Dell PC is available. There are in excess of 4,500 computers at NUI Galway and it is possible to make significant energy savings by managing the power consumption on these systems. The Windows Power Options Properties can be used to automatically manage and configure the energy saving settings for your PC or laptop.

WebMail/Beacon Current Status- 4 February 2009
Users of the
Student WebMail service will have experienced slow or dropped connections to the service. This general slowness often manifests as an error connecting to IMAP server or a �Connection refused� error message. The problem is most prevalent at times of peak usage i.e. 11:00 to 16:00, Monday to Thursday inclusive. Information Solutions and Services apologises for this degraded service which is volume related: the WebMail/Beacon servers remain up and online, but are receiving so much connections and traffic that they cannot process them quickly enough.

New look for StaffMail Outlook Web Access login page - 16 December 2008
The StaffMail Outlook Web Access (OWA) login screen now incorporates the NUI Galway logo. This change applies to the English language version only. Users are not affected by the change and no action is required. The login credential display and background colour remains the same.

Following Vodafone�€�s approval of the latest service release for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, maintenance work was carried out on 27 November which makes PDF attachments available again from the BlackBerry device.

Colour Printing - 17 November 2008
Students, did you know colour printing facilities have now been commissioned in two additional locations. You can print to the new printers from a cluster of suites close to each printer. Notices to this effect have been posted in these suites. Locations and details of the new colour printers are available online.

Microsoft DreamSpark - 7 November 2008
Microsoft DreamSpark enables students to download Microsoft developer and design tools at no charge. Students can access this through the Microsoft Students web site This site enables students to download professional-level Microsoft developer and design tools. In order to get this software from Microsoft at no charge, students will be asked to establish or verify their student status once every 12 months. Students will need to sign up using NUI Galway email address.

Staff Computer Scheme Update - 9 October 2008
The funding allocation towards the purchase of new IT Equipment under the Staff Computer Scheme for New Academic Staff and the Registrar�€�s Computer Scheme has changed to €1,200 per qualifying member of staff with effect from Monday, 13 October 2008.
ECDL - 26 September 2008
ECDL Basic modules are available online to registered staff and students of NUI Galway using Blackboard. This allows you to study at your own pace from any computer with an Internet connection. NUI Galway has a licence for the ECDL Basic course from AutoTrack. Full information available online.
Configure StaffMail for off-campus use - 16 September 2008
Staff members did you know, if you use your computer when off-campus, you can configure Outlook 2003 to connect to the Exchange server. This gives you exactly the same email interface both on and off-campus. Macintosh users can set up an Entourage 2004 account for off-campus use.

Browser Developments - 3 September 2008
Google have made a Beta release of their new Web browser which they are calling �Chrome� available for general download and trial. Meanwhile, Microsoft has made a Beta 2 release of their upcoming v8 revision of Internet Explorer available for download.

ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 6 is now available from the ESRI Support Center. This service pack contains several performance improvements and maintenance fixes. Switch off your PC and monitor.
When you are finished work, logout & manually shutdown your PC & monitor and turn off power at the main switch for maximum energy savings. Please do not leave your PC logged in and switched on overnight and at weekends, as this usage pattern wastes a lot of electricity & damages our environment.- Re-configure Windows Power Options.
The Windows Power Options Properties can be used to automatically manage and configure the energy saving settings for your PC or laptop using the settings shown in the Information Solutions and Services web site.

NAL Explorer - 20 February 2008
As of Friday 22nd of February 2008 the Application Explorer Icon (yellow folder on the desktop) will be replaced campus wide by the NAL (Novell Application Launcher) window, affecting all PC Suite users. The advantage is that the window is opened automatically after login and makes the software applications more obvious to users.
Disabling of Reply to ICMP Ping Requests - 7 February 2008
In line with best security practice, Information Solutions and Services are with effect from today, Thursday Feb 7th 2008, disabling at Firewall level the functionality which allows reply by University devices to ICMP ping requests emanating from external hosts, with the exception of a small number of specified University machines. You may request that this functionality is enabled for a specific device within the University by making contact by email with our Service Desk. Please specify the IP address of the relevant device along with a rationale for the requirement.

Please be advised that this is a fraudulent email which does not originate from AIB and is instead an example of a common scam known as phising. More information on phising is available online. No bank, or reputable internet merchant, will ever request that you enter your account or account access details in response to an email. AIB bank has published further information on today recurrence of this scam on its website. If you are in receipt of this email today, you may follow the instructions detailed in the AIB bulletin about this issue: specifically, to forward a copy of the email to alert aib.ie and then delete the original email. - Re-configure Windows Power Options.
