The recommended platform for all standard computers in use in NUI Galway is Windows XP/Office 2007 (or Mac OS X/Office 2008). PC Suites continue to be based on a Windows XP/Office 2007 platform.
All Windows computers sourced through the NUI Galway Central IT Equipment Procurement Contract are pre-imaged and shipped with Windows XP/Office 2007.
Information Solutions and Services does not recommend Microsoft Windows Vista for use on standard NUI Galway computers. This is due to known compatibility issues with certain specialist and legacy software products running in a Vista environment.
In cases where users have sourced a Windows 7 or Vista-based PC from a source other than the NUI Galway Central IT Equipment Procurement Contract, Information Solutions and Services will provide limited, advisory support only. Due to driver compatibility issues, Information Solutions and Services will not downgrade machines to XP.

Availability of Windows 7/Office 2010
Under the
Microsoft Campus Agreement, managed by Information Solutions and Services on behalf of the University, there is an entitlement to unlimited use on campus on University-owned equipment, and educational use off-campus by permanent members of staff, of Windows 7 Enterprise edition and Office 2010 Enterprise edition. This software is available for loan to members of staff through our Service Desk and may be installed by staff subject to the caveats outlined in this statement.
Anti-virus
Vista users should install McAfee 8.5i. If using the computer on the NUI Galway wired network, installation of EPO 4 is an additional requirement.
Installation instructions are available online.
Apple Macintosh
Macintosh users may require the use of a Windows Operating System (OS) within a virtual environment. Vista is
not recommended for use within such a virtual environment due to its heavy system requirements. ISS recommend using either Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 Enterprise editions depending on the specification of the Mac.
