What is SPSS?

SPSS is a computer program used for statistical analysis

Does NUI Galway have a site license for SPSS software?

Yes. NUI Galway has a site licence agreement which is renewed in July. SPSS may be used by any employee, student or other persons authorised by NUI Galway for the purposes of the normal business of the University, whether or not they are located on campus. Such use of the software includes:

• Teaching
• Research
• Personal educational development
• Administration and management of the business of the University
• Development work associated with any of the above.

"For the avoidance of doubt any Medical Teaching Hospitals or any HSE organisation which are in any way affiliated with the LICENSEE (or any person whilst working for such Hospital or organisation is not permitted to use the SOFTWARE licensed under this Agreement. If SOFTWARE is required by Medical Teaching Hospitals or such HSE organisation (or by any PERMITTED USER whilst undertaking work for such organisation) a license may be purchased separately from SPSS."

How can I get SPSS software for my computer?

• SPSS is available in the PC Suites
  
  
• Students
  Students can download the software from the Presidion SPSS web site. 
  • When registering your details with SPSS, please omit apostrophes and commas.
    Enter your details and click Submit
    
  • Before installing, you must request the SPSS Licence code from the ISS Service Desk, (ext. 5777, email servicedesknuigalway.ie).
    

    Note: Requests for the SPSS licence code will only be accepted from your NUI Galway StudentMail account. You must provide your student ID number,  the version you are installing, and you are also obliged to sign a copyright acknowledgement form.

Can I install SPSS software on my home computer?

Yes. The software is available to download ( see links above). Before installing, you must request the SPSS Licence code from the ISS Service Desk, (ext. 5777, email servicedesknuigalway.ie) and you are obliged to sign a copyright acknowledgement form .

How do I renew my SPSS license code?

Instructions on renewing the SPSS license code are available online.

Where can I get technical support about SPSS? 

Technical support is available online from the  SPSS website.  
If your query is not answered on the SPSS website, the site license agreement allows for technical support via a single technical contact only. Please contact servicedesknuigalway.ie with any such query.

Known Issues

• MAC Users: When installing SPSS on a MAC you must have an administrator password set on your machine.
  
  
• Windows Users: (Error 1935) Disable McAfee Virus protection software while installing SPSS.  McAfee will allow connections over Internet explorer, it will not allowing other programmes to connect to the Internet. Once installation is complete re-enable McAfee.
  
  
• Windows Users: Error 1335 when trying to install SPSS
  1. First, copy the SPSS folder to your c: drive.
  2. Upon completion of copying the folder go to Start->Run.
  3. In the open field add C:SPSSsetup.exe, select OK. SPSS should now install. 
     
  
• SPSS Licence Key - To licence SPSS with proxy settings
  
  
• SPSS Licence Key  - Temporarily disable your anti-virus software before you enter the SPSS Licence Key
