How to automatically forward WebMail (BEACON) student email to another email address

Registered students of NUI, Galway who have a WebMail account can set their mail to automatically forward to another mail address, if required. Note that this does not apply to users of the new StudentMail service provided for students registering for the first time from 21 August 2008 onwards.

This utility is likely to be of interest to new staff members who also have a student email account and wish to forward mail from their student address to their new staff account. It is important to remember that the student email account will be deleted in due course when you are no longer a registered student.

Instructions to set the auto-forward are as follows:

Note: Available only for on-campus wired network connection e.g. PC Suites.
The instructions outlined below will not work off-campus or when using the NUIGWiFi wireless network.

1. Open Telnet
   Telnet is available in most PC Suites on-campus.
   For all other computers connected to the wired NUIG network, go to the Start menu, click Run, type in  Telnet and then click OK. 
   
   
2. Type Open BEACON.NUIGALWAY.IE 
   
   
3. Enter your username (Student ID number) and press Return 
   
   
4. Enter your email password and press Return 
   
   
5. At the $ prompt, type mai and press Return 
   
   
6. At the MAIL prompt, type set forward 
   
   
7. At the _Address: prompt, type in the alternate email address where you want to forward your mail and then press Return
   
   
8. At the MAIL prompt, type exit and press Return 
   
   
9. At the $ prompt, type logout 
   
   
10. At the Telnet prompt, type quit
    
    
11. Close the Telnet window
    
    
12. Any messages to your student email address will now be automatically forwarded to the alternate address that you have specified.

How to turn off autoforward from WebMail (Beacon)

1. Repeat steps 1 - 5 listed above
   
   
2. At the MAIL prompt, type set noforward and press Return 
   
   
3. Repeat steps 8 - 10 listed above.
