How to connect to a networked printer

How to Connect to a Departmental Networked Printer

Please note: Since 2016 the Unversity of Galway have implemented a central managed and supported Print Service. These are multi function printers that allow for printing/scanning and emailing. This printer is fully supported in terms of maintenance, toner and printer supply by MJ Floods.

ISS will not setup any new departmental printers as it is not the supported print model.

* Staff who wish to have their own printer can still do so, but only via a USB connection. It should not be shared out with any other staff and support for the printer is generally via the vendor whom you purchased the printer from. ISS can offer very basic assistance in terms of connectivity to the printer but are not in a postion to resolve hardware issues with the printer as these standalone printers tend of have a limited shelf life with limited configurability to hot swap replacement parts.

The process below is useful for staff who wish to connect to pre-existing departmental printers that have a legacy network connection.

Departmental (shared) printers are connected to the campus network to facilitate staff printing to a centrally located printer in their department. You will need to follow the steps outlined below in order to print to the shared printer.

  1. Find out the IP address of the printer

  2. Download the printer drivers

  3. Add the printer using the ’Add Printer’ Wizard

  4. How to re-configure your printer connection for a new IP address

  5. How to add a departmental network printer (Mac)
  6. Connecting to the Release Queues from a networked PC or Laptop

Note:
If you have a departmental printer that you wish to connect to the campus network, you must complete a node registration form.
