SSLVPN - Remote Access Service

Overview

NUI Galway provides a Virtual Private Network service to allow staff to make a secure encrypted connection to the NUI Galway network from a remote location i.e. home or abroad. Staff who use this service are able to remotely access NUI Galway network services which are normally restricted to those who are situated on campus. Please make yourself familiar with the QA406 Remote Access Policy.

Services offered

The SSLVPN offer the following services:
1.    Offsite access to NUIGalway Fileshares (U:, M:, etc.)
2.    RDP access over html5 to a specific target IP address
3.    SSH access over html5 to a specific target IP address
4.    Access to T4 SiteManager and NUIGalway internal webpages

Eligibility

  • Students have automatic availability to Service 1, offsite access to Fileshares and do not have rights to access the other 3 services.
  • NUIGalway staff have eligibility to all options but must request access to options 2 & 3 using the process outlined below.
  • Service partners or other 3rd parties have eligibility for options 2 and 3 but sponsor must get Head of Department approval for access to resources before they will be assigned a VPN account.

Operating system

The functionality of this service is browser based using html5 and the following Operating systems and browsers have been successfully tested:

Windows 10

Firefox 65.0.1, IE11 & Chrome v72.0.3626

MAC

Chrome & Safari browsers

Internet Connectivity

You must have a good broadband service available either at home or while travelling abroad to be able to access the VPN service.

How to Request remote VPN access

  1. Log a ticket using Service Desk Ticketing System 
  2. Categorise the ticket using the following dropdown options:  Wifi & Network > Remote Access > VPN >new request
  3. Give the following information:
(i) IP address of your PC or the system or service you wish to access off-campus.

To find your IP address on a windows      To find your IP address on a MAC

(ii) MAC address of your PC or the system or service you wish to access off-campus.

To find your MAC address on windows and MAC devices

(iii) Access method required (SSH/ RDP / Other)
      (iv)The name of the staff member requiring the access.


      (v) Email address of the staff member.

      (vi) NUI Galway Staff ID

      (vii) Operating system of the off- campus devices that will be used to access the resources.

4.   Ensure that your PC/laptop meet ISS security requirements to allow the VPN service to be installed on your computer.
