As the University's centre of excellence in the discipline of Information Technology, the department's mission is to:
The National University of Ireland, Galway has identified Information Technology as one of its key strategic academic disciplines. Within the Irish University sector, it has a unique approach to development of IT research and teaching, recognising separate demands for: IT as an individual discipline focused on industry's needs for Software Engineering skills and research; and IT in combination with other disciplines to address the broader skill needs of the information society. The Department of IT is the University's School of IT and has grown rapidly, since its establishment in 1991, to become the largest academic discipline of the University.
The Department of IT currently has 18 full-time academic staff, two administrative staff members and two full-time technical staff, as well as up to 20 part-time teaching and research assistants.
The Department is now housed in a purpose built state of the art building completed in January 2001. € 11.5m was spent on this dedicated 4100 m2 building on the banks of the River Corrib. This provides state-of-the-art facilities for IT teaching and research. About 35% of the physical space of the building is dedicated to advanced research.
The IT Building is situated at the rear of the main University Concourse, overlooking the River Corrib.
