Top award goes to Dr. Michael Madden and Mr. Frank Glavin from Information Technology
Mr Frank Glavin and Dr Michael Madden from Information Technology in NUI Galway received the award for best paper at AICS-2009,The Artificial Intelligence & Cognitive Science conference, held in Dublin in August 2009; see aics.ucd.ie. This conference has been held annually in Ireland for the past 20 years.
Their paper was entitled “Analysis of the Effect of Unexpected Outliers in the Classification of Spectroscopy Data”, and demonstrated the importance of considering ‘outliers’ (unusual cases) when evaluating machine learning classification algorithms. This research was funded by Enterprise Ireland under a Commercialisation Fund – Technology Development project entitled “OSCAIL: One Class Classification and Inductive Learning”.
Further information on this and related research can be found on the website of the Machine Learning & Data Mining Group, which is led by Michael Madden: datamining.it.nuigalway.ie.
