A research poster from the IT Department took top honours at the annual NUI Galway Energy Night last Wednesday evening (26th January 2011).
Organised by the Chemistry, Physics and Energy societies, the event brought together industry and academic leaders to discuss Ireland's future energy crisis. The poster session was held in the Orbsen building prior to a lively panel debate which was skillfully moderated by RTE's energy correspondent, Paul Cunningham.
Outlining the current research being undertaken by a group of IT postgraduates* into Data Centre Energy Efficiency, the poster faced strong competition from across a range of disciplines involved at the cutting edge of Irish energy research. The research being carried out will analyse a range of energy metrics from NUI Galway's ISS data centre using wireless and SNMP monitoring, visualisation and artificial intelligence agents. The objective is to help data centre staff and management make informed optimisation decisions as part of their overall energy efficiency strategy.
* The postgraduates involved in the research are: Mark White (PhD), Jonathon Shannon (PhD), Jonathon Hanley (MSc) supervised by Dr Hugh Melvin (IT), Dr. Michael Schukat (IT) & Dr. Marcus Keane (Civil Engineering). Maria Linnane and Wesley Reilly represent the ISS data centre
