HEA ICT Skills Initiative Funding Success for NUI Galway and High-Tech Industry Partners

NUI Galway, in collaboration with software industry partners, has been awarded HEA funding for an innovative industry-focused Higher Diploma in Software Design and Development. The goal of this one-year post-graduate conversion course, co-designed with industry experts, is to increase the supply of skilled graduates to meet the needs of Ireland’s high-growth software industry. It will provide graduates with a fast-track, focused computing qualification, and presents them with an opportunity to obtain valuable industry work experience.

The new Diploma builds on the existing strengths of collaborative academic-industry interaction in the Galway region, and will provide graduates with: (1) a solid foundation in key software design knowledge; (2) a choice of software architecture specialization in either .NET or Java Enterprise; and (3) a guaranteed work placement to gain relevant experience, and so provide the opportunity to kick-start their career as software developers.

The industry partners include Avaya, Ericsson, Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), Fidelity Investments, Hewlett Packard, Storm Technologies and the Marine Institute, and the new course will be delivered as part of the Information Technology Discipline’s complimentary portfolio of postgraduate degrees.

Ericsson scholarships

Ericsson R&D Centre in Athlone has announced with the Discipline of Information Technology that it will offer a number of scholarships to 2nd year M.Sc. Software Design & Development students.   The scholarships will comprise a contribution towards fees plus a paid internsip during which students will work on a supervised research or development activity at the Ericsson R&D Centre in Athlone.

Funded Graduate Study Opportunities in Software Engineering and IT

The College of Engineering and Informatics offers well established 1 year and 2 year graduate programmes in Information Technology and Software Engineering.   The programmes are open to candidates with little or no IT experience.   We attract students from all faculities - Arts, Business, Engineering, Law, Science and Medicine/Health Sciences, as well as many overseas canidates.   For EU students, our Graduate degrees are supported under the HEA IT Skills programme, which covers most of the fees.   Fees payable by EU students should be approximately €2,500.
