Course Overview

This intensive full-time four week (180 hours) postgraduate programme (level 8) provides training, specialised  knowledge and skills needed  for graduates who wish to teach English as a Foreign Language. Successful course participants are awarded  a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language by the National University of Ireland, Galway. Successful completion of this course enable graduates to proceed to the NUI Galway postgraduate Higher Diploma in TEFL.

COURSE CONTENT

This intensive course covers Basic Teaching Skills,  Teaching Practice, Language  Analysis, Theories and Approaches to Language  Teaching, English as a Foreign Language Methodology, Grammar Presentation, Syllabus Design, Testing, Evaluation, Introduction to Linguistics,  English for Special Purposes,  Portfolio Preparation, Microteaching, Teaching Young Learners,  Assessment of Young Learners, Teaching Adults, Multicultural Education,  Modern Developments in English as a Foreign Language and Teaching Overseas.

COURSE FORMAT

Sessions are in the form of lectures, discussions, microteaching and a minimum of fifty hours supervised teaching practice. Teaching practice is arranged by, and takes place in NUI Galway during the course. Each student designs a portfolio of relevant material to be submitted at the end of the course.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment includes written assignments, student performance in teaching practice, the teaching portfolio  and student performance in the  course examination  which is held at the end of the course.
