Please note that you can only arrange health insurance with an Irish Health Insurance Provider when you are living in Ireland. Medicover (see below) can be purchased online before travelling to Ireland.

The Health Insurance Authority is a statutory regulator of the private health insurance market in Ireland. The Authority also provides information to consumers regarding their rights and health insurance plans and benefits.

Health Insurance for Immigration Purposes

Non-EU students are required to show proof of comprehensive medical insurance when registering with the Garda National Immigration Bureau. Proof of medical insurance is also required when applying for a student visa. 

Medicover

Medicover is a medical expenses insurance policy available exclusively to students travelling to Ireland from overseas to undertake a course of study at an approved educational establishment. This can be purchased online before travelling to Ireland.

The policy provides cover for medical expenses incurred whilst in Ireland arising from any accident or any illness requiring hospitalisation to a limit of €2,500,000 during the period of insurance.

Medicover does not provide cover for any pre-existing illness known to the insured person at the time of purchase, nor does it cover pregnancy costs while in Ireland.
