Direct Lending Program
Welcome to NUI Galway's Federal Aid web page. As of July 2010, NUI Galway participates in the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program. I would like to advise you to start the application process (which is mostly unchanged from previous years) as soon as possible by completing your FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (this produces your 'Student Aid Report'), and gathering the required paperwork. For full details on the application process and documents required, please see the 'Federal Aid Guide for Students 2011' at the end of this page. Please note, our school code is G12766.
Types of Financial Aid Available
Federal Programs There are several federal programs available for U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens who are enrolled at least half-time, making satisfactory academic progress, and are not in default on a previous loan or exceeding federal loan limits.
The following programs are available to eligible National University of Ireland, Galway students:
1. Federal Direct Loans
a. Direct Subsidized Loans
b. Direct UnSubsidized Loans
2. Federal Direct PLUS loans
Federal Direct Loans
These are fixed-rate student loans for undergraduate and graduate students attending college at least half-time. Direct Loans can be either Subsidized or Unsubsidized.
Direct Subsidized Loans are federally guaranteed loans based on financial need as determined by the Department of Education. Interest does not accrue on the loan while you are in school at least half time, or during any future deferment periods. The federal government "subsidizes" (or pays) the interest during these times.
Direct Unsubsidized Loans are federally guaranteed loans that are not based on financial need. Interest does accrue from the time the loan is disbursed to the school.
Federal Direct PLUS Loans
This type of loan is not based on financial need. The parents of an undergraduate dependant student (as defined by the US Department of Education) OR an independant graduate is eligible for this loan if they meet certain credit guidelines and if the loan is certified by the university.
All student loans are subject to the maximum limit of a student's 'Cost of Attendance', which is an estimate of tuition plus living costs as determined by the University.
