If you are a 2nd Year BA student not studying a continental language, and are interested in participating in the Erasmus programme (or in studying in the US or Canada) for the academic year 2010/11, please note that an information session will take place as follows:
Time: 6pm on Tuesday, 2nd February, 2010
Venue: Colm Ó hEocha Theatre (AM250), Arts Millennium Building
This will be your opportunity to find out about the various possibilities for study abroad and to learn about the practical and academic aspects of the B.A. International. Some former students will speak about their experiences, and you will be able to ask questions. Application forms will be distributed at this information session and will be available for download here afterwards.
You should be aware that the number of available exchange places is limited, and success of applications will depend, to a considerable extent, on students’ academic record, but also on the availability of suitable exchange places that match particular subject combinations.
studying abroad for a year as an undergraduate
If you are studying a continental language as part of a BA degree, you will be required to spend a period of time in the relevant country in order to be allowed to proceed to Final Year; in the majority of cases, this will mean an academic year (your Third Year) spent at a university abroad through the Erasmus Programme, and your language department will advise you accordingly.
If you are on the B.Comm. International programme, an obligatory year at a university abroad will be built into your course structure, and again, your language department academic coordinator will talk to you about participating in Erasmus.
Students on some Law programmes also have the possibility to study abroad, and these opportunities will be presented to you by the Law Faculty (and/or your language lecturer if you are taking a continental language). Erasmus places in Law are not confined to students of languages; the Law Faculty has links with some universities that offer courses through English.
You can find a lot more information on the Erasmus programme on our Erasmus pages.
What if I'm a B.A. student not studying a language? Can I go and study abroad?
We have a number of Erasmus links with universities in Europe where courses are offered through English: the UK, Malta, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, etc. Depending on your particular combination of subjects, you may be eligible to apply for one of these exchange places. Or you may be interested in applying for a place at Boston College in the USA or at the University of Ottawa in Canada. All such study visits take place between Second and Final Year, and entail a transfer from the standard 3-year B.A. Programme to the 4-year B.A. International.
