You are an Visiting/Occasional Student if:
You have been admitted to undertake a programme of study that is a sub-element of a recognised full-time programme. You may be adding a full subject to an existing degree, or you may be a ’Visiting Student’ who is registered in another University which will give you credit in their programme for academic work you complete in NUI Galway. As an Occasional Student however, you are not on a programme leading to a Degree, Diploma or any other award of this University. Normally only students of another University, in good standing, or graduates are admitted as Occasional /Visiting students. The majority of Occasional Students are registered in the Arts Faculty, and the categorisation ’Occasional Arts’ is sometimes used.
Duration of Programme:
Visiting Students may attend for a single semester or for the two full semesters of the Academic Year. In no case can a Visiting Student extend this period other than in very exceptional circumstances approved by the Faculty.
Other occasional students may be approved to complete a defined sub-element of the B.A. degree. This may involve for example a full subject, taking the programme for that subject as offered in the Degree. In this situation a student may be approved to commence at an appropriate level in that subject and progressthrough each year of the subject until it is completed to BA level.
Programme Outcome:
On successful completion of the academic work, a formal result is communicated by way of a transcript to the student. This is a record of modules or subjects completed, and the level of achievement in terms of Grades or Honours attained. It does NOT represent an Award in the formal sense; no Diploma, Certificate of Degree is awarded.
Admission Criteria:
Visiting Students will be registered in their home University, normally for the award of a Degree at that institution. They will have completed at least one Academic Years’ work successfully and have demonstrated a strong academic performance.
