NUI Galway, International Summer School, Education In Ireland

Academic Director: Dr. Mary Surlis, B.A., H.Dip. in Ed., M.Ed.

This programme is designed to offer North American teachers an opportunity to study aspects of the Irish Education System and, concurrently, to study the history, literature and culture of Ireland. It will be suitable for elementary and secondary teachers, adult educators and migrant minority language and special education teachers.

Course Faculty will include members of the University as well as guest educational practitioners will contribute substantially to the course.

Course Structure And Method

The course will consist of two inter-related units:

• The Education System of Ireland.
• History, Literature and Culture of Ireland.

Teaching will be by means of lectures, seminars, meetings with Irish educators and visits to educational institutions as well as guided cultural tours which will facilitate contact with the music, language and people of Ireland. Students will be provided with informal opportunities to view and study relevant videotapes from the university library. There will also be facilities and time for private study as well as touring and sightseeing at weekends. Assessment for those requiring credits will be carried out on a continuous basis.

SU601 The Education System of Ireland

A review and analysis of the Irish educational system – its origins, development, structure and organisation – from early childhood to adult provision. Courses of special study may be selected for elementary, secondary or tertiary education; adult and continuing education; special education; vocational training. Participants will have an opportunity to meet with Irish educators during seminars and during visits to educational and social institutions in urban and rural settings.

Special arrangements for informal meetings between individual participants and their counterparts in Ireland will be facilitated during the programme.

For participants whose primary interest is Special Education, arrangements will be made for workshops and seminars with Irish practitioners in this field.

History

An overview of Irish History from the time of the famine, with particular emphasis on emigration and the factors leading up to the current political situation in Ireland.

Literature

A review of the literature of Ireland written both in English and Irish with emphasis on the distinctive achievements of 20th Century writers such as Yeats, Joyce and O’Casey.

Culture

An introduction to the music and folklore of Ireland as well as the Irish (Gaelic) language. Participants will have an opportunity to visit a Gaeltacht to experience Irish as a living language.
