Programme Overview

This course aims to give students a comprehensive insight and understanding of the Irish language, its rich musical and cultural heritage and folk studies in the beautiful rural setting of Carna, in North West Connemara. Covering a diverse range of subjects, this course not only offers students an in-depth appreciation of Gaeltacht culture, but also a context for the language, its people and its heritage.

Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim is one of the National University of Ireland Galway's (NUIG) Irish Language outreach Centres.  The Centre is located in the beautiful rural setting of Carna in the heart of Connemara Gaeiltacht (Irish Speaking region) on the West Coast of Ireland.

Programme Outline

The course will consist of two subjects: Irish Language for Beginners and Traditional Arts and Culture.

Irish Language / History of the Irish language
- Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
- Expanding vocabulary using texts, audiovisual and digital supplemental material
- Informing participants of the resources available to learners at this level
- The History of the Irish language and the Gaeltacht
- Current issues pertaining to the Irish Language and the Gaeltacht
- Irish language literature
- Place names

Traditional Arts and Culture
- Folk life
- Folklore
- Sean-nós singing and dancing
- Traditional Irish music
- The Connemara Landscape

Credits:              6 Semester Credits/10 ECTS Credits.

Entry Requirements

Applications are welcomed from adults interested in Irish language, culture, folk studies and traditional arts.

Assessment

Continuous assessment, oral and written examinations.

Accommodation

Full board (which includes full Irish breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in modern private houses with Irish-speaking families.
