MA IN ITALIAN
We are one of the few centres in Ireland and UK where you can study Italian Critical Theory and the influence it has on other disciplines in the Humanities. You will develop research methods and cross-cultural and intercultural awareness, study in an interdisciplinary environment, and participate in our novel approaches to language teaching, including the application of new technologies.
There will be 3 core modules:
Great Books of the 20th Century (10 credits);
Great Films (10 credits);
and Dissertation (30 credits).
These three module are worth 50 credits. The remaining 40 credits can be made up by taking the following modules.
Great Books of the 20th Century 2 (10 credits);
Great Films 2 (10 credits)
Defining Historical and Social Events (10 credits);
Applied Language Skills (10 credits).
In the modules you will discuss a series of key literary and cinematic works, contextualise them within relevant historical and social contexts, and relate them to wider European and international trends and movements. This will highlight the specificity of Italy as well as Italy’s European and cosmopolitan underpinnings.
Employment & Career opportunities
Increasingly, people find themselves working in a multilingual or multicultural environment. Those with good language skills will be better able to take advantage of the free movement of people, capital and service afforded by the European Union.
Graduates in Italian have found employment in second-and third-level teaching, media, administration, cultural activities, journalism, event management, marketing, public service, retail, technology, translation and interpreting, travel and tourism.
