Our links with Italy

Students are encouraged to spend time in Italy in order to deepen their knowledge of the culture and perfect their command of the language. Some choose to attend intensive summer courses in Italy, while others take the adventurous route of seeking employment in that country, especially as teachers of English, since native speakers are in demand there. Out of such experiences come summer or year long jobs, lasting friendships and even possibilities of permanent work in Italy for those who have succumbed to the attractions of this vibrant civilisation. A number of students succeed in spending time in Italian universities, most of them under the B.A. or B.Comm. Socrates scheme.
Italian Studies at NUI Galway has for many years played an active role in the Socrates (former Erasmus) exchange programme, establishing cooperation links with the following Italian Universities: Bologna, Pavia, Torino, Milano, Trento, Urbino, Genova, Udine, Forli and Verona. Students who take the B.A. International spend their third year at one of these universities. Students who take the B.Comm. with Italian (GY205) also spend their third year at one of the above universities.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sends a guest lecturer to teach full time in the department, and this person has major responsibility for promoting all things Italian in the university and surrounding area. The post is currently held by Dott.ssa Maria Rosaria Coda.
Italian Studies also promotes many cultural events of interest to students and the general public.
