What the Students Say
Margaret O' Connor: a recent graduate of the MA (Advanced Language Skills)
I found the course an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. It helped me to develop skills that are useful for the workplace with the study of translation technologies such as Trados. It also offered me the opportunity to study academic disciplines that interested me, such as Translation Studies. The skills that I developed should provide a good foundation for my future career.
Jennifer Lertola: current PhD student
My project focuses on the development of subtitling practice in foreign language classes. This new
teaching/learning method is used to promote second language acquisition through audiovisual translation.
"The structured PhD programme offers students the unique opportunity of pursuing a research project while integrating the experience of research with discipline specific activities and transferable skills based courses. One of the main advantages of the structured PhD, in contrast with a self-motivated research project, is the sense of inclusion and guidance the students experiences due to regular meetings with staff and other PhD students throughout the course.”
Edward Valentine: current MA student (Advanced Language Skills)
The MALS Italian allows students to gain the necessary practical experience in areas such as consecutive interpreting, translating and audio visual subtitling. I feel the knowledge and experience gained in these classes are invaluable and serve as excellent attributes that will help students achieve success in their future careers.
The greatest asset to the master ALS course is undoubtedly the teaching staff. They are on hand to offer students their full attention and help out enormously with any queries, be they big or small. They provide extensive assistance and ensure that students get an abundant measure of one-on-one attention. The Master ALS Italian course at NUIG is where knowledge and experience come together.
