I've been running my own company since 1997 (the early days of the internet!) in web conferencing. I was looking for an online degree programme in IT. I wanted to combine flexible, current, up-to-date, online study with running my own business. An online programme was the only way I could do that. I left university in the early 80's after earning a BA degree and Diploma in Education. I saw the MScSED as a way to "open the door again" to continued learning.
Although I had years of programming experience during my career, I happily took all of the core modules, including Fundamentals of Programming. In the words of one of my former clients, "it helped me to remember what I forgot"! The C language [used in the Fundamentals of Programming module] is at the root of everything above it, so it was a valuable learning experience.
The 8-week accelerated modules are a core asset. You complete a module and it's done. As online students, we want to get a subject finished, use it in our work (if applicable), and not have to worry about memory recall for some end-of-year examination many months later.
What did I get out of the course? Earning the MScSED was certainly recognition - as well as improved confidence, especially in going for new business. The MScSED reinforced and updated my informal and workplace learning. It was a stamp of academic recognition and approval on years of work I've done in the corporate ICT sector.
What I got out of the programme was an absolute awareness of the importance of academic research. Whatever we do in industry now, it has its roots in some academic activity. The MScSED also reignited my interest and passion in research. I recently applied for funding to pursue my PhD. This will help me to further develop my business in advanced software engineering - an area that is critical for the future of the country
