Established in 2007, The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures contains six disciplines,
Classics,
French,
Gaeilge,
German,
Italian and
Spanish.
This unusual combination provides an exciting range of possibilities for study, extending from the ancient world to the most contemporary, cutting edge developments in European languages, literatures and cultures. Additionally, it includes indigenous languages of Britain and Ireland, and, recently, initiatives in Dutch and Chinese. Singly or in combination, such disciplinary options equip graduates with excellent linguistic and critical thinking skills, giving them a distinct edge in a competitive employment market.
More than 40 full time academic staff members teach and research in the School, with a total student population of 1700 students. We provide a broad and stimulating range of courses, including many interdisciplinary modules.
Standards of teaching and research are high, and many members have achieved international recognition for their work.
The School takes pride in the diversity and quality of teaching and learning it has achieved and that it continues to maintain. It has identified the following themes as
areas of priority: Ancient, Medieval and Modern Textual Transmission; Gender Studies; Language Learning and Policy; Linguistics; Literary Texts and Their Contexts; Memory; Place, Space and Displacement; and Translation Theory and Practice.
Further Information on current research can be found on the individual discipline websites.
