Ciara Smyth is a graduate of NUI Galway (B.A., LL.B) and holds an LL.M in Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (with distinction) from Queen’s University Belfast. Before joining the Law Faculty in 2003, Ciara worked in the human rights field, both in Ireland and in Cambodia, where she spent two years with the Cambodian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. On returning to Ireland, she worked as legal officer in the Irish Commission for Prisoners Overseas. From 2001-2003 she worked in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Representation in Ireland, primarily in the area of training and capacity building of staff in the asylum institutions. She continues to act as training consultant to the asylum institutions on matters relating to refugee status determination, is a member of the Immigrant Council of Ireland’s Legal Working Group and regularly contributes to public meetings and discussions on immigration and asylum issues. She is a visiting researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Immigration Law, University of Leiden where she is undertaking a PhD on the compatibility of the Common European Asylum System with the rights of the child.
