Conor Hanly graduated from N.U.I., Galway with a B.A. in History and Legal Science in 1988, and with an LL.B. in 1990. In 1994, he completed an LL.M. by research at University College Dublin entitled "Pricing: A Behavioural Approach to Abuses of Market Power", for which he was awarded First Class Honours. From 1990 to 1995, Conor worked in a civil litigation environment in the Claims Department of Eagle Star Insurance Company. From 1995 to 2000, he was Lecturer in Law at Waterford Institute of Technology, and in 2000, he joined the staff at N.U.I. Galway.
From 2003 to 2004, Conor was a Graduate Fellow at the Yale Law School, where he was conferred with a Master of Laws degree, and was awarded the Joseph M. Parker Prize in Legal History and Roman Law for his paper, "The Decline of the Civil Jury in Nineteenth Century England." He was also an editor on the Yale Law and Policy Review.
While in Waterford, Conor acted as advisor to the Doras project run by Waterford Institute of Technology, which was an outreach programme for those involved in juvenile prostitution in Waterford City. He has offered training seminars to members of CURA and to the Network of Rape Crisis Centres. He has also acted as External Examiner to Athlone Institute of Technology.
Conor's main research interests lie in the field of criminal law, and he is currently directing a major study into attrition rates in rape cases. This study, funded by the Rape Crisis Network Ireland, is due for completion in August 2007. Conor is also especially interested in the historical, contemporary and comparative position of the jury. He is the author of An Introduction to Irish Criminal Law, published by Gill & Macmillan, and is currently preparing an updated edition which is due for publication in 2005. He has contributed to a major study on the interaction between alcohol and the law, published in 2003. He has also published a number of articles in various journals such as the Irish Criminal Law Journal and the Dublin University Law Journal.
