Sixth International Workshop on Adaptive Optics in Industry and Medicine
In mid June, 140 engineers and scientists from 25 countries converged on NUI Galway to participate in the Sixth International Workshop on Adaptive Optics in Industry and Medicine. This was the largest ever of these international biennial meetings held around the World.
At this year’s workshop, for the first time, an industrial exhibit was staged, with 11 companies taking part, from mainland Europe, U.S., UK and Ireland. A highlight of the meeting was the disclosure, by a major Japanese company, that it uses adaptive optics in its DVD players, with over 1m units being shipped every month.
In addition to the financial sponsorship by 16 companies, and quality approval by The European Optical Society and The Optical Society of America, this workshop was supported by Enterprise Ireland, the IDA, Science Foundation Ireland and Fáilte Ireland. With over 90 scientific presentations, it was an outstanding success and reflected international recognition of the research carried out at NUI Galway in this area.
