The Department of Management teaches 51 class groups in 29 courses across the University. The Department's main area of teaching is the B.Comm., the Faculty's primary undergraduate degree. This comprises a range of business and management subjects and a human resources stream in the final year, which is formally recognised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development for licentiate membership. The Department also provides service teaching for the Faculties of Arts, Science and Engineering.
The Department's main area of postgraduate teaching is the Executive MBA, which includes courses in strategy, organisational behaviour, human resources, change management, research methods and business negotiations. The Department also contributes to other higher degrees such as the Master of Business Studies (MBS) for commerce graduates and the Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) for non-commerce graduates.
As a result of recent expansion, the Department offers a one year taught MBS in Corporate Strategy and People Management and a one year taught MBS in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management with CIPD membership accreditation. It also contributes to the new online M.Sc. in Technology Management, offered with the University of Limerick and University College Cork as part of the Atlantic University Alliance (AUA).
Members of the Department are pursuing research in the areas of industry cluster development, workplace performance, enterprise level partnership, gender equity, trade union organisation, employment and training, strategic management and strategic environmental management. The Department won two of the five awards in the recent 2nd Irish Case Writing Competition, organised by the European Case Clearing House, and have been successful in attracting research funding from the Irish Government and EU.
The Department is committed to building its research profile with further applications for research funding, attraction of higher degree students and research visitors and new staff appointments. It plays a central role in the new Centre for Innovation & Structural Change ( CISC), which is based in the Faculty of Commerce but also includes researchers from other faculties and institutions in Ireland and overseas.
The Department has established linkages across the University in the teaching of multi-disciplinary courses and externally with business, public agencies and other third level institutions. For example, the Department has a key role in the new Master of Information Technology offered with the Irish Management Institute (IMI) in Dublin.
The Department works closely with the Galway Chamber of Commerce, IBEC, SIPTU and the Galway Trade Union Council. These organisations contribute to both research and teaching programmes. The Department is also involved in the Steering Group of the Atlantic Technology Corridor, which is an emerging cluster of high tech companies in the Galway/Shannon/Limerick region.
The Department is also working closely with the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Shannon College of Hotel Management and the western branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development. In 1998, the Department hosted the Inaugural Conference of the Irish Academy of Management, and more recently it has run an international seminar series and workshops on areas of research and public policy.
