The Discipline was established in 1980 when the first Chair was funded by the Bank of Ireland. There are now seven full-time academic staff, supplemented by part-time assistants and a full-time administrator.
Marketing is one of the five core disciplines in the Cairnes School of Business & Economics, the others being Accountancy & Finance, Business Information Systems, Management and Economics.
The Marketing Discipline offers specialisms in a range of programmes, including the B. Comm. Degree and the MSc (Strategic Marketing), MSc (Marketing Practice), Executive MBA, Postgraduate Diploma in Business Studies programmes, together with service teaching in the Schools of Humanities, Medicine and the College of Engineering & Informatics.
The Discipline has approximately 2,164 undergraduate students across all its programmes, and over a hundred postgraduate students. It also has a number of Ph.D. students.
The ethos of the Discipline has always been to combine a thorough grounding in Marketing as an academic subject, with a practical focus in preparation for careers in the field. Students learn about Marketing, but are also trained in the important core competencies for business. The Discipline enjoys close links with the business community through involvement of staff in its graduate placement programme and executive courses.
Research interests in the Discipline include Services Marketing, Global Marketing, Relationship Marketing, Marketing Practice in Ireland, Marketing Strategy, Branding, eMarketing, Foreign Market Entry Strategies and SME Internationalisation, Marketing Innovation and Technology and Social Marketing.
Members in the Discipline work closely with Institute for Business, Social Sciences and Public Policy (formerly CISC) for funding.
All staff are active researchers and have recently published in the European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing, Services Industries Journal, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Journal of Research in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, the Irish Marketing Review, International Marketing Review and Journal of Irish Management.
Members of the Marketing Discipline have won awards for case studies in Marketing and are frequent presenters and keynote speakers at international conferences such as the AMA, EMAC, Quis 10 and the Academy of Marketing .
The standard text in Marketing Research, used in most Irish third-level colleges, has also been written by members of the Discipline.
The Discipline has close and active links with businesses in Ireland and abroad. An example of
guest speakers invited to address and meet our students include Professor Luiz Moutinho, University of Glasgow, Professor Leslie de Chernatony, Birmingham University, Redmond O'Donoghue, former CEO, Waterford Crystal; Feargal Quinn, Adjunct Professor to Discipline & Founder and former CEO, Superquinn; and Murray Raphael, Raphael Marketing, Atlantic City.
Since 2007 GlaxoSmithKline have awarded a summer internship to NUI Galway Marketing students who achieve the highest marks in the Marketing stream in the B.Comm., along with a prize of €1,000 each. The winners of this prestigious and valuable award are listed below:
