NUI Galway and GMIT celebrated the Joint Access Foundation Course Graduation evening last Thursday. Over 80 students received their Certificates on the night. Many of these will now go on to study full-time and part-time degrees in either NUI Galway or GMIT. “The Foundation Courses are part-time, evening courses and give students a taster of a selection of subjects including, maths, physics, biology, chemistry, biology and business”, said Trish Hoare, Mature Students Officer at NUI Galway. “ The students are prepared academically in advance of degrees in these areas, with some students never having the opportunity of gaining second level qualifications prior to these courses”, she also said.
NUI Galway provides an Access Programme for people from backgrounds of "socio-economic disadvantage". The programme includes an Access course for Mature Applicants (over 22 years on January 1st of year of entry) who, for financial, or related reasons were unable to proceed to Higher Education.
The Access course for Mature Applicants is provided at several centres including NUI Galway, Sligo, Clifden, and Ballinasloe. Participants who successfully complete an Access course will be eligible to apply for direct entry to full-time University Degree courses in the Colleges of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies, Business, Public Policy and Law, Science and Engineering and Informatics.
