Biography

I am a speech and language therapist with almost twenty years’ experience working with children who have speech, language, and communication problems. I have worked as a lecturer in the Discipline of Speech & Language Therapy at NUI Galway for over 12 years.  I have practiced as a speech and language therapist in a variety of paediatric settings from private practice to Temple Street Children’s University Hospital.

I have a wide variety of research interests. I am drawn to narrative as an interesting and ecologically valid way of measuring communicative competence in children. I am interested in narratives in adults with acquired communication impairments, in a broader sense, as lives interrupted or disrupted by communication impairment. I recently received funding NUI Galway Research Support Funding for SALT (Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts) software with a view to profiling narrative generation ability in children with diagnoses of SLI, ADHD, and internationally adopted children.

I am interested in mass media representations of people with communication impairments.

I  completed my Ph.D. in the area of mediated representations of cosmetic surgery and dermatology as solutions to the problems of normative discontent in women. 

I completed an M.Litt. investigating the interactions between pregnant women and midwives at an antenatal clinic and have a strong interest  in the area of power in health care interactions. I continue to conduct research in the area of midwifery with a particular emphasis on the discourse of professional midwifery bodies and women's birth narratives. 

I am also interested in bilingualism, specifically in parents' experiences of navigating speech and language therapy services.

Finally, I am conducting research into report writing in speech and language therapy; in particular examining evaluations and representations of clients.
