Welcome to the School of Medicine

The School of Medicine at NUI Galway is one of three Schools at the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. We have a tradition of excellence in teaching for over 175 years, and our undergraduate medicine programme is renowned across the world. We have a wide and varied range of postgraduate programmes aimed, with clinical and non-clinical options.  Our community is research focused and our impact and partnerships are truly global. We connect and partner with community organisations, both locally, nationally and internationally. Our School has been awarded the Athena Swan Bronze Award.

Building for the Future

We have developed Medical Academies for Teaching and Research in Sligo, Letterkenny, Mayo and Ballinasloe.

The construction of a €40 million Human Biology building on campus was completed in Autumn 2016.

The recently completed Clinical and Translational Research Facility adjacent to the Clinical Science Institute was jointly funded by the University, the Health Research Board and the Health Services Executive.

Research

Our teams are engaged in world-class research, advancing health through research, discovery and innovation, with particular emphasis on cancer, gene and stem cell therapy and biomedical engineering science.

Research undertaken by members, is aligned to the priority research areas of the Universtiy and staff participate in research as part of multi-disciplinary teams.

We collaborate with many research institutes and centres including CÚRAM, REMEDI, The Martin Ryan Institute, Corrib Core Lab, Galway Diabetes Research Centre, Galway Neuroscience Centre and the Clinical Research Facility.
