Members of the Discipline of Medicine are involved in all three research strands within the NCBES: Regenerative Medicine and Biomedical Engineering; Cancer; and Infection, Inflammation and Immunology.
Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI®)
Professor O'Brien and Professor Barry established the Regenerative Medicine Institute at NUI, Galway (REMEDI) in 2004. The focus of the Institute is to exploit the synergies between the technologies of gene delivery and stem cell biology to promote organ regeneration and repair. The principal initial disease targets of the Institute are ischaemic cardiovascular disease and osteoarthritis.
Prostate Cancer Institute
Directed by Professor Frank Sullivan, the Institute, which is primarily focused on developing better therapies for patients with prostate cancer, will benefit from a close association with the extensive clinical services already offered to these patients at University Hospital Galway (UHG) and other regional hospitals. The Institute will also collaborate with the wide-ranging biomedical research programmes of the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Sciences (NCBES) at NUI Galway and with a number of research institutes in Ireland and internationally.
Clinical Research Facility, Galway
TheHRB Clinical Research Facility, Galway (CRFG)leadership team is Director Professor Frank Giles and Associate Director Professor Martin O'Donnell. The CRFG is a joint venture between Galway University Hospitals (GUH) and National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), funded by the HRB, and has been in operation since March 2008. The CRFG (www.crfg.ie ) provides the infrastructure, physical space, facilities, expertise and culture needed to optimally support patient-focused research studies and clinical studies aimed at understanding a range of diseases and translating the knowledge obtained through this research work into reimbursed, regulatory approved advances in patient care as speedily as possible.
CURAM has been funded under the recent SFI research centre call. It is focused on medical device technology and will establish Ireland as a global hub for medical device technology. Members for the Discipline of Medicine are participants including Professor O’Brien who is one of the principal co-applicants.
The Centre for Cell Manufacturing Ireland (CCMI) is a 250m² cleanroom supporting REMEDI Translational Research. It is housed in the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Sciences (NCBES) at NUI, Galway. The facility will translate as well as manufacture stem cell research from REMEDI's various programmes into cell based medicinal products for GMP investigational patient enrolled clinical trials.
Galway Diabetes Research Centre
The Galway Diabetes Research Centre (GDRC) is a joint venture between NUI Galway and Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group (GRUHG), which will bring together an interdisciplinary research consortium of active researchers and clinicians who have a track record in the field of diabetes. The centre is ideally placed as a hub for collaborative effort of top researchers and clinicians, with a passion for this work, to provide a greater understanding of how diabetes develops and the underlying mechanisms, the development of new and better therapies for patients, and assessing health care interventions and delivery for patients.
