Welcome to Mayo Medical Academy

Mayo Medical Academy is a branch of NUI Galway Medical School.  There are approximately 60 students here currently in their third/fourth and final year of training.  The Academy started in 2012 and moved into its current premises in 2015.   All staff at the Mayo Medical Academy are committed to providing a positive and supportive learning environment for all students that pass through.

What Does Our Academy Offer?

The Academy is a peripheral academy of NUI Galway.  Each student who attends is in the Academy for a full year and becomes integrated in Mayo University Hospital.  Mayo University Hospital has been linked with Liondiani Hospital Kenya since 2009.

Special Study Modules 

Each year special study modules are undertaken by 4th year students in the Academy.  This is a standard requirement at this stage of their undergraduate training.  Here are some examples of the high quality assignments submitted by our students detailing their experiences and outlining valuable learning gained:

Transport - how to get here?


Knock International Airport is 40km north of Castlebar. 

The cost of a taxi from Knock to Castlebar is approximately €55. Alternatively,  Bus Eireann operates a bus service from the airport to Castlebar.  Please click here for futher details. 


There is a train service from Castlebar to Dublin which takes approximately 3.5 hours.  Please see the Irish Rail website for timetable information.

Bus Eireann operate regular country-wide bus services to and from Castlebar.

Sports & Leisure:‌

Mayo Adventure Experience is an outdoor activity company based in the heart of Castlebar at Lough Lannagh. The company offers a range of activities for all abilities, in and out of the water.  Activities include team building, orienteering, canoeing and stand up paddling.  Water based activities range from 1 hour taster sessions up to overnight expeditions; the centre will cater to your needs as requested.  Orienteering courses and mapping are also being offered to schools and clubs around the county.

Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex offers an 8 Lane - 25m competition pool, 15m learner pool, sauna & steamroom, persons with disability access ramp and poolpod for pools entry.  The complex incorporates The Movement Gym as well as 2 yoga, pilates and reformer pilates suites.

With regards to price, a €40 1 month promotion is available to all first time members of the complex.  Student membership prices (as of July 2019) are as follows:  

3 months - €150,  6 months - €240, 12 months - €420

All the above memberships include full access to the entire complex which includes a swimming pool, health spa & gym and also includes entry into yoga & Pilates classes. The once off admission for students is €7.50 and again includes full access to the complex.  Student ID is required as proof to avail of all the student rates.
