Sligo Medical Academy
Welcome to Sligo Medical Academy
Established in 2009, Sligo Medical Academy provides Clinical Teaching to over 60 3MB,4MB and 5 MB students, rotating here for one year, January to December of either 3MB/4MB or 4MB/5MB. Our team of Lecturers and Strand Leaders provide an excellent clinical immersion experience on site. You will get a chance to work with clinical teachers across specialties from your first clinical experience in 3MB to your fine tuning of skills prior to qualifying as Junior Interns. The Sligo Medical Academy is located on the 7th and 8th floor of Sligo University Hospital.
What does our Academy Offer?
Sligo Medical Academy is a purpose built facility intergrated with NUIG, with wifi and internet access, a lecture room, clinical skills lab, tutorial rooms, kitchen and social area with the best views in Sligo!

Our new Clinical Teaching facility opened in November 2015 on the 7th and 8th floor of Sligo University Hospital. Reception and the tutors offices are located to the right on the 8th floor.

Student accommodation is of good quality and value (cheaper than Galway), with many students using the same accommodation year on year.
Most students pass their rental accommodation on to each other and most is nearly or in town, which is less than 10 minutes walk from the hospital.

There is a a subsidised canteen on Level 2 of the Sligo Medical Academy; a coffee shop and shop on Level 3. The cost for breakfast is €1 and for €2 for dinner.
There is a kitchen / social area for students on Level 8.

Sports & Leisure:
Sligo is a great place for outdoor pursuits, with active clubs such as athletics, soccer, gaelic, hockey, rugby, surf & boat club. NUIG students can access IT Sligo sports facilities (just across the road) and running track at student rates. The soccer pitches are very popular. Students may join the IT gym but there are other good gyms with local hotels and the gym in the Clarion Hotel is closeby, beside the psychiatric hospital.
All students are allocated a mentor on arrival.

The C.R.I.B. in Sligo town is a multifaceted service providing a range of services and supports to enable the healthy development of young people aged 12-18yrs.
Sligo University Hospital Mosque is located between Flat 2 & Flat 3 (beside the building where you get your Sligo Regional Hospital ID badge – Flat 2).
There is also congregational 5 times daily prayers & JUMU'AT service on Fridays in the Globe House Muslim Community, Chapel Hill, Sligo (located behind the Garda (police) station.

There are a range of Special Study Modules and Research Summer Studentships available at the academy. Please contact our Academy Administrator for details.
The Air, Land and Sea: Search and Rescue Special Study Module is available at Sligo Medical Academy Campus. It is aimed at students who are interested in pre-hospital care and the great outdoors. The module offers the opportunity for hands-on joint training exercises with the Irish Coast Guard’s aeromedical unit in Strandhill, including aircraft safety briefings and a familiarisation flight; motor vehicle collision extrication maneuvers with the Sligo County Fire Service; simulated rescue training with the Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team; and shore teaching and maritime exercises with an all weather lifeboat at the Achill RNLI station. The course director is Dr Scott Walkin.
There is a very active programme with the Research and Education Foundation which is a registered charity and limited company set up to support training, education and research in health care in Sligo Regional Hospital and its catchment area in the HSE North West Area.

The Sligo Medical Academy was officially launched by the Minister for Health, Dr Leo Vardakar on 15th February, 2016.
