Information and guidance for commencing 1st year

Commencement of the Programme

Orientation activities for our undergraduate programmes will run from Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 September.

Teaching will commence on Monday 9 September. On this date, the School will be processing all student forms required for clinical placements. Please bring all relevant documentation on this date.

Uniform requirements for clinical practice

You will be provided with uniforms for your clinical practice placements. However, there are other essential uniform requirements, such as shoes, fob-watch and scissors, which you will need prior to undertaking your clinical placement.  For more information please read the Uniform Requirements guidelines.

Uniform fitting will take place on the first Friday of the term in September, between 9am and 1pm in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. All students must attend to be fitted and order uniforms.

Health Declaration and Occupational Health Screening

To determine an applicants’ fitness to perform duties within the clinical area whilst on clinical placement, all students must be reviewed and cleared by the Occupational Health Department (University Hospital Galway) before they can commence their clinical placement. This screening is carried out over the first few weeks of the programme. In preparation for the screening, you are required to complete the Pre-Placement Health Declaration form.

‌You will also be required to provide records of previous vaccinations and immunisations. If you have been previously treated or are currently under management for any medical, surgical or psychological condition, the Occupation Health team will ask you to provide letters from your managing physician and/or consultant which clearly identifies the condition, severity of the condition, the past and current management of the condition and the current status of the condition. You should provide your doctor/consultatant with the Letter for GP Consultant Information‌ which specifies the information you need to have in relation to your condition. To avoid any delays in the Occupational Health Screening process, it would be in your best interest to request these letters from your health care team as soon as possible.

Note: Students who are not cleared through the Occupational Health Screening process cannot undertake clinical placement and will be required to withdraw from the programme.
