University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) is a 500-bed referral or tertiary-level hospital. This is the major teaching hospital of the Medical School. It is located immediately adjacent to the main university campus. Communication and the integration of clinical and basic teaching are greatly facilitated by this proximity.
Merlin Park Hospital, also located in Galway City, is the second designated teaching hospital. Eight additional affiliated hospitals throughout the region are linked to the Galway Medical School.
Students of Galway Medical School are based in the Clinical Science Institute for their Clinical years. This building is located in the grounds of UCHG. It contains the Medical Faculty Office, lecture theatres, laboratories, seminar rooms, computer suites and common rooms. The NUI Galway Medical Library is located in the Clinical Sciences Building.
The Hospital Departments encompass all of the important clinical and laboratory disciplines: Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, General Practice, the Subspecialties, the Clinical Laboratory Departments and the Specialist Diagnostic Units.
The annual admission rate of inpatients is high. The specialist units attract a variety of clinical material. Students spend attachments and electives in various clinical units in one or more of the ten hospitals affiliated to the Medical School. (In all, the Medical School draws on a catchment area with a population of c. 1 million people). These factors, together with the traditional emphasis on small group or individual bedside clinical teaching, combined with the availability of the most sophisticated diagnostic techniques, provide the student with the opportunity to develop the skills, experience and knowledge required by the good physician.
