Intern Application Process

Welcome to Internship in Network West Northwest

Internship is a mandatory part of your training and is a one-year training post. You will be registered with the Medical Council of Ireland but you have restricted intern registration only. Upon completion of your training and signing off you will be awarded a certification of internship by the medical council and be allowed to progress to specialist trainee or general registration. You cannot progress in your medical career without certification of internship.

The intern year  (seen here) is a rewarding one where you get a chance to put your knowledge into practice. You will receive support and encouragement from all your supervisors and trainers, who will remember many of you from your undergraduate years. Make no mistake, it is tough and you will find it difficult and sometimes think the learning curve is just too steep to climb – but you will get there like everyone else and every week that you work the tasks become easier and more enjoyable. The intern tutors and supervisors take an active role in your training and your wellbeing and are there to help you.

We deliver a structured 12-month internship and a robust education and training programme that focuses on technical and non technical skills training.

There are a variety of internships designed to suit those who have a career plan and those of you who are still unsure. All the internships rotate through the main teaching hospital, Galway University Hospital. You have the choice of an internship that focuses on general medicine or general surgery, or, one that offers many specialties

In the network we take an active role in helping you to plan your future and have a programme that will allow you to develop a highly competitive CV. The education and training programme is designed to develop your CV and your competence and confidence in all areas of medicine – technical skills, emergency management, human factors, medico legal knowledge, career progression. We focus on promoting self-directed learning and the continuum of learning and encourage you to involve yourselves in research projects and audits and to develop case presentations for national meetings.

All interns are registered with the National University of Ireland, Galway, school of medicine which allows access to the library and wi fi facilities and the college information platform “blackboard”

Interns are informed of upcoming training, educational activities and career opportunities via an intern dedicated facebook page  http://www.facebook.com/DOCsolid and blackboard. A Galway University Hospital intern app has been developed to provide you with hospital information, protocols and procedures. Interns are encouraged to actively participate in their learning and their input into future curriculum development is encouraged

INTERNSHIP GENERAL  INFORMATION:

There are 6 intern training networks in Ireland, centered around each of the 6 medical schools (Shown Here)

Each network has a main hub teaching hospital, and several smaller hospitals.                                                                       The hub teaching hospital in Galway University Hospitals (GUHs)

The intern coordinator for WNW is Professor MJ Kerin.                                                                                                          The intern administrators for WNW are Ms Therese Dixon in the medical school in NUI Galway and Ms Lorraine Gleeson, GUH.  There are intern tutors in each hospital who are responsible for your education and training and are there to offer you help and assistance.

INTERNSHIP POSTS AND STRUCTURE:

An internship is for a period of 12 months minimum and is made up of several rotations through the medical and surgical specialties.  A minimum of 3 months in general medicine and 3 months in general surgery is a requirement for an internship In addition to general medicine and surgery, internships in WNW include the specialties of:

 In 2012/2013 there were 571 jobs nationally and 102 internships in the West Northwest network. Four new jobs were created in WNW for 2012 – cardiothoracic surgery, emergency medicine GUH, respiratory medicine and medicine for the elderly in Roscommon General Hospital.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR GRADUATES OF IRISH MEDICAL SCHOOLS ONLY:

Application for internship is through the Health Service Executive National Recruitment Service. This is a 2 stage process. Applications are invited in November (stage1) and March (stage 2). Successful applicants receive notification of their internship in June. For intern posts in July 2013, holding a valid BLS certificate is a requirement – the final date for submission of this certificate is the 19^th March 2013.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATES OF NON IRISH MEDICAL SCHOOLS IS SEPERATE

 As an intern you will have intern registration with the Irish Medical Council.

At the end of internship you will be awarded a certificate of experience by the Medical Council of Ireland, which will allow you to progress in your career.

SIGNING OFF BY THE NETWORK AND THE CERTIFICATE OF EXPERIENCE:

 At the end of internship you will be signed off as competent and having completed intern training requirements, by the Intern Network Coordinator. Once signed off by the network, your name will be submitted to the medical council for a certificate of experience.

Requirements for signing off:

 The National Intern Training Programme (NITP) core curriculum and the National Intern Education and Training Agreement (NIETA) are guides to your education and training requirements

 In WNW the following requirements apply:

•  Attendance at intern induction programme
• Signing and completion of the requirements on the NIETA
• A minimum of 12 months internship
• Satisfactory 3 monthly assessment forms, completed by the supervising consultant
• Completion of log sheets 3 monthly, recording technical procedures
• Certification in ACLS
• Certification in the National Early Warning Scoring system
• Completion of a manual handling course
• Attendance at dedicated intern teaching sessions
• Attendance at team related teaching activities (journal clubs, MDM, MDTs)
• Attendance at grand rounds and medical and surgical case conferences
• Completion of all prescribed training courses and clinical skills training– see NIETA
• Completion of on line training modules NITP e learning programme
• Simulation away days in the ASSET centre UCC

THE INTERN ELEARNING PROGRAMME:

 This programme is an online version of the intern core curriculum, delivered in powerpoint tutorial format , followed by a number of MCQs. The content has been developed by the intern networks and is updated regularly.

Upon commencing internship you will be given a username and password and will be informed via email as to the dates of release and expected completion of each set of tutorials and MCQs (modules). Each module is available to you for approximately 6 weeks. A 70% completion rate is required for sign off.
