Full-time overseas students have studied in Galway for over 40 years. They have come from many parts of the world. At present, there are some 1,500 overseas students in the University from over 50 countries, of whom 200 are in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Continental European students spend clinical electives in the hospitals associated with NUI Galway. The Medical School offers a limited number of elective placements during the summer vacation period June/July and August and for a maximum period of two months.
A number of factors lead overseas students to study medicine in Galway. These include the quality of education provided and the worldwide recognition given to Irish medical qualifications. Galway, because of its size, its location and its cultural background, provides an environment that is safe and supportive.
Overseas students are highly motivated and achieve academic success. Social aspects are not neglected as the overseas students are often elected as class representatives and on occasion are selected for one of the University's sporting teams. The overseas students make an important contribution to the Medical School.
