Overview
- Consider during Summer prior to Final Med
- US electives are intense, complete them only if you are genuinely interested in working in the US.
- Aim should be to secure a residency interview and LORs
- Start elective portfolio early and ensure your documents are in order, both as hard copies (ensure you have a number of photocopies) and an electronic copy (preferably pdf files). Most hospitals require a standard set of documents. Your portfolio should include: CV, immunisation details, USMLE score transcript, School transcripts, personal statement, Personal Health Insurance, Letters of reference, photo), involves considerable effort and stress.
- The main point of a US elective is to secure interviews for US residency, choose places where you would enjoying living in the States. It is important to impress to secure vital letters of recommendation etc. Each location will have different deadlines/elective fees/application fees/ visas/ malpractice insurance policy etc, email/ phone the school early for clarification. A number of hospitals will not take students in July. The vast majority require USMLE Step 1 passed.
