Along with other University departments, Microbiology forms the core of the Institute and the Marine Microbiology Section is led by Prof. John Patching, aided by Research Associate, Dr. Robin Raine.
The Marine Microbiology Section carries out teaching and research into the processes mediated by microorganisms (microalgae, bacteria and viruses) in the marine ecosystem.
University College Hospital Galway
Collaborative research projects are ongoing with a number of clinical departments of University College Hospital including the Departments of
Medical Microbiology, Immunology, and Gastroenterology.
Those research projects are primarily concerned with studies of the pathogenicity and epidemiology of infectious bacteria.

Collaborative interactions with the hospital have led to the completion of a number of successful research projects. In addition, the projects include the training of scientific and clinical personnel in microbial technologies and applications.
