Microbes are the hidden powers on planet Earth.

They are by far the most abundant life form (numbering at least in the
quintillions!) - it's a microbial planet - they drive biogeochemical
cycles and are essential
partners in biological interactions with other organisms, including humans.
Microbiology will underpin our approach in the 21st century to
emerging infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance, new
biotechnologies, global warming and concerns over energy security.
Yet, our knowledge of microbial
diversity and function is still only
limited.

Microbial Glycobiology Book launched at NUI Galway

The first comprehensive book to be published in the emerging field of microbial glycobiology was launched
at NUI Galway.
"Microbial Glycobiology - Structures, Relevance and Applications"
comes at an
important time as glycobiology is having significant impact upon our
understanding of microbes, their control and exploitation. The Editor-in Chief, [the late] Prof Tony
Moran said:
“Industrially, major developments in vaccine design, drug discovery and
diagnostics are being made based on microbial glycobiology, and
technologically the field is expanding our understanding, detection and
therapy of various infectious agents”.
For more on the story, as well as more details on the book, see our

focused on a common hospital bacterium, urges a rethink of how
infections are managed.
