Microbiology at the NUI Galway Open Day, 25th April 2009
Microbiology
opened its doors to second-level students for the NUI Galway Spring
Open Day, with a series of presentations and demonstrations.
Future students sat into a short, university-style lecture on the topic "What can't bacteria do?". They also met with postgrad Microbiology students and got hands-on experience with the following:
microscopy for the examination of microbial cells;
agar plates growing live microbial cultures;
a "bio-energy economy" model display - with a model factory, a real mini wastewater treatment bioreactor (containing waste-degrading and biogas-producing bacteria), as well as a biogas processing and electricity production plant;
DNA fingerprinting;
the popular, interactive "How clean is Your Phone" experiment;
a short visit to our pilot-scale waste treatment facility (the only such facility on the island of Ireland).
The theme of
the visit to Microbiology was "Meet the Microbes!".
