in the Moore Institute Seminar Room

The 10th-century Connacht poet Irard mac Coisse is titled 'príméices Érenn 'Ireland's foremost poet' in his annalistic obituary (†990). Among his patrons were such leading Irish figures as the king of Tara, Domnall (†980) úa Néill, and his queen, Der Fáil (†1010). Poems he wrote in their honour are among his extant works. The most important text attributed to him is the long allegorical tale Airec menman Iraird Coisse. Many scholars have commented on its great significance for understanding Gaelic literary tradition.

In Week 1 and 2, a literary context for this work will be outlined. Thereafter, transcripts of the manuscript witnesses will be compared with the aim of making a critical edition.
