Project: This project, PRA 8.1, will explore the texts read and written by Irish scholars between the seventh and mid-ninth centuries based on an analysis of the extant manuscripts. By doing so we shall be able to establish the range of texts available to Irish scholars of the Early Middle Ages and to appreciate the innovations in written culture developed by Insular scribes, which still influence the presentation of a text on the page. Working in cooperation with other institutions and projects, we propose to assemble digital images, photographs, and microfilms of Insular manuscripts. Then we will analyze their texts and their scripts with the goal of establishing, as precisely as possible, where, when, and by whom they were written. We shall publish our results in print and on the Web as a catalogue of manuscripts and a preliminary list of 'Books Known to the Irish.' www.foundationsirishculture.ie
