Society History
The Society began as the "Irish
Society for Electron Microscopy" and held its first symposium in
1976.
The first symposium under the current name "The Microscopical Society
of Ireland" was held in 1989.

30th Annual MSI Meeting:
The 30th Annual meeting was held in NUI-Galway and was a resounding success with ~50 submitted
abstracts and nearly 100 attendees and 14 trade exhibitors.
Best Oral Presentation:
Shane Bergin, TCD, Ireland: Bundle
dissociation of single-walled carbon nanotubes in amide solvents. Alexander Gansen, German Cancer Research
Center, Dept. of Biophysics of Macromolecules, Heidelberg, Germany: Chromatin
dynamics on the single nucleosome level analysed with single pair FRET spectroscopy.
Best Poster Presentations:
Holger Stephan, Dept. of Biochemistry,
NUI-Galway: Analysis of human replication protein a (hrpa) in the cell
cycle and after DNA-damage.
Abbasi Gandhi, Material and Surface Science
Institute (MSSI) and Department of Physics, University of Limerick: Dynamic manetization reversal using magneto optical kerr effect microscopy.
29th Annual MSI Meeting:
The 29th Annual meeting was held in the FOCAS
institute at DIT on Wednesday the 7th to Friday the 9th of September 2005.

in pdf format. Apart from the usual presentations and posters, the meeting
saw a number of additional events and workshops. Full details of the programme

28th Annual MSI Meeting:
The 28th annual meeting of the society was held on 1-3
September, 2004 in Trinity College Dublin.
Dr. T.S. Perova, Dept. of Electronic & Electrical engineering, TCD,
was the local organiser for the meeting. The
scientific and social programme of the meeting is posted here,
and it comprised of 11 invited speakers, 17 submitted oral presentations,
and 22 posters. This year we awarded 4 student prizes
of €250 each.

27th Annual MSI Meeting:
The 27th annual meeting of the society was held on 10th-12th of September,
2003 in University College Cork. The conference the conference included
a RSC sponsored seminar featuring Professor Saul J B Tendler, Professor
of Biophysical Chemistry, University of Nottingham. There were several
student prizes of €150 awarded :
Best speaker:
"Composition and stress analysis in Si structures
using micro-Raman spectroscopy." John McCarthy, Dept. of Electronic
& Electrical engineering, TCD.
Best materials poster:
"Functionalised Magnetic Nanoparticles." Serena Corr, Dept.
of Chemistry, TCD.
Best biological sciences poster:
"The influence of Titanium surface porosity on adherence and growth
of osteoblast-like cells from the Saos-2 cell line in vitro: an
electron microscopy study." Nigel Murtagh, NCBES, NUI-Galway.
